Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Explain the current statutory entitlements for maternity, paternity, shared parental, adoption and parental bereavement leave and pay, including the key qualifying conditions and notice requirements
- Understand the recent day-one rights introduced under the Employment Rights Act 2025,
- Apply the correct procedure for handling flexible working requests under the Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Act 2023, including the updated timescales and the eight permitted business reasons for refusal
- Understand the enhanced redundancy protections for pregnant employees and those on or returning from family leave under the Protection from Redundancy (Pregnancy and Family Leave) Act 2023, including the 18-month protection period
- Manage an employee's return to work following maternity or other family leave, including the right to return to the same or a suitable alternative role
- Recognise the connection between family-friendly rights and other protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010, including indirect sex discrimination and pregnancy and maternity discrimination
- Identify when a manager's response to a family-friendly request may constitute detriment or a rejection of a statutory right and understand the risks associated with these claims
- Apply best practice in communicating with employees on family leave, maintaining engagement without applying undue pressure to return
