Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Explain the distinction between performance (capability) issues and conduct issues and understand the different legal and procedural frameworks that apply to each
- Set clear, specific and measurable performance expectations using structured objective-setting frameworks, from the start of employment
- Conduct regular, purposeful performance conversations (including probation reviews, one-to-ones and appraisals) that motivate improvement and create evidential records.
- Give constructive, evidence-based feedback that is specific, balanced and legally defensible.
- Introduce an informal performance improvement conversation before escalating to formal process, and understand when informal intervention is no longer appropriate.
- Design and implement a formal Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) that is fair, measurable and legally compliant
- Document performance concerns and management interventions accurately to build an evidence trail that supports further formal action up to and including dismissal if required
